 Not All Butterbur is Created EqualJun 12, 2007

My wife's board-certified neurologist recommended Petadolex brand butterbur for her migraines. She has a bad reaction to sulfa drugs and other expensive drugs are not covered by our insurance. Butterbur is regulated as a pharmaceutical in other countries, but not the U.S. The most important thing about butterbur is that in its natural state, it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA's), which can cause liver cancer. Unlike some "natural" varieties of butterbur, PA's have been removed from Petadolex. Although it can be used at the onset of migraines, it is primarily used to prevent them and is not fully effective until used for up to two months. (We have not completed our full course of treatment yet, so I cannot speak to results in our specific case) If you find yourself turning to butterbur for migraines or other conditions, be smart and get a quality brand like Petadolex because not all butterbur is created equal.
Update #1: my wife now complains of a "grassy" taste from belching after taking butterbur. I apologize if you did not want to know that!
Update #2: Well over two months later, my wife is seeing gradual and subtle signs of improvement. The doctor is weaning her off of stronger pharmaceuticals to reduce interactions. There are a lot of moving parts at work here, but the butterbur appears to take the "edge" off enough that she can survive her "days off".

I was very hopeful to have a way to prevent migraines since I can't take NSAIDs (they irritate my stomach). I know the manufacturer's website says that there are no side effects, but there were for me. I felt fine before taking it, but within minutes, my stomach started cramping and then I kept burping. I tried to drink a lot of water to hopefully dilute the effect. The cramping continued later in my intestines and I didn't feel right for the rest of the day. To be fair, I have multiple food allergies and sensitivities so I'm not surprised. The purpose of my post is to let people know that side effects are possible.

I'm a chronic migraine sufferer and decided to give this product a try. I tried it for several months with no noticeable change in intensity, frequency or duration of migraines. I took the recommended dosage as suggested on the bottle. There's really not such left to say. I didn't have any problems when discontinuing use. Since some people apparently do see some relief, I would not use my experience as a reason not to try this product; anyone who suffers from migraines knows how individual we all are as to remedies. I began taking this about 2 months ago due to chronic headaches and migraines. I saw results within the first few weeks. I made the mistake of not ordering another supply, and I've been miserable all week! I definitely reccomend this product!

I have suffered from migraines for over 40 years and had almost given up finding a product that would work for me. I read an article in a womans magazine about this product. I had to try it. Well I am happy to say that it has definitely helped me. I have had one migraine in the 6 months that I have been taking this. I was getting a migraine headache at least once every two weeks before starting this supplement. I am convinced that this product has lessened the frequency and severity of my migraines. If you suffer from migraines, I would try this product. I have experienced NO side effects at all with this.
