5WOW!Mar 30, 2010
By Rachel Hope
I will be eternally grateful to the author of the book "Enzymes For Autism" who recommended eyzymes.
Here's the link to the book via Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Enzymes-Autism-Neurological-Conditions-Updated/dp/0972591850/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269973479&sr=8-1

She recommended Houston Neutraceuticals.

Enzymes changed my son's life, so naturally my husband and my lives! That book was the first time I'd ever heard of using enzymes to help with Asperger's/autistic "idiosyncracies." You know what I'm talkin' about!!! The book's explanation for why they help makes sense. Long story short: it seems with autism, there is a common "leaky gut" syndrome. I don't know about your kid, but mine wants a lot of wheat and dairy (also very common with autism/Asperger's), the very things that are not good for him. He can't digest them very well. So undigested wheat and dairy proteins leak into the system, where they don't belong whatsoever. They end up in places they have no right to be. Like the brain! The gluten/caseine wandering molecules wreak havoc neurologically. So enzymes targeted at gluten/caseine proteins help digest the offending molecules, before they can escape the gut, and get into mischief.

When my son started taking enzymes, his eye contact became better within days (as the book said it might). It was actually weird to look into his eyes - I was so unused to it. Beautiful eyes!!! He started getting much more socially adept, interactive. Happy. "The Happy Child Effect", as the book terms it. His terrible gastric problems, which were getting worse and worse, and keeping out of school more and more, disappeared very quicly. No more gas. No more cramping so bad he couldn't stand up straight. His grades went up, of course, since he could go to school! I can not put him on a GFCF diet for many reasons. I wish I could, I think he'd do even better. But for anyone who also can't go so far as that diet, enzymes will probably help out immensely anyway.

I started taking them myself and my digestion has REALLY improved! Apparently, they also reduce inflammation because the body isn't fighting what it perceives as invaders - the gluten/caseine molecules that leak into the system. Inflammation is implicated in a whole host of problems: heart disease, auto-immune problems, to name a couple.

Can't say enough about enzymes . . . for everybody! And this brand is really wonderful. The website has a host of information.

5Working so farJan 02, 2010

My almost 5 year old son has autistic behaviors (PDD) and sat down and played catch for a half hour with my husband for the first time in his life after just 3 days on these enzymes. No stimming and he threw the ball over hand and across the entire basement. He wasn't even showing signs of being ready or willing to do this. The dark circles under his eyes are lessening. We have a bit more eye contact than usual and he is more verbal though it is still jumbled up speech.

Just for that late Christmas gift alone this was money well spent.
Will update review over time!

Update 1/21/10
My DS has much improved eye contact both at home and in his early intervention class. His stimming is still there but has modulated into more socially appropriate behavior. For instance, during his spinning episodes he used to swing his arms and flap his hands while watching the spinning. Now he sits there and just watches. His bowel issues seem to be improving. Instead of so many loose, runny, stinky stools his have normalized a bit.(sorry to be graphic but it is part of the disorder!) He is also beginning to use jargon, which is a very positive sign. His imitation skills are on the mend as well which is great to see. (when he imitates good behavior LOL)

I am slowly trying to go GFCF diet with him but it is REALLY hard since my oldest has a life threatening nut allergy and our diets are already limited. So what I have done is pulled the milk from his drinking routine and the cereal from his breakfast and snacks. Then I give the enzymes in yogurt *yes, I know it is dairy* and then feed him his meal. These enzymes literally liquify the yogurt and the casins which thicken it. He also has gained a little bit of weight since starting these enzymes which is a near miracle since this kid has always been too skinny.

I almost forgot - he actually eats chicken and salads now. I can't say all these changes are only due to this one enzyme since we have also started several other suppliments about a week after the enzymes but I feel my son is a lot healthier because of them.

Update 6/22/10

We have been using these enzymes for over 6 months now! DS continues to improve. I have gone from skeptical to reassured that these enzymes are helping my son. We give them with high phenol foods and last week he ate cherries, strawberries and a pound of grapes. Well..mom forgot the enzymes! Through that night and part of the following morning his face flushed, ears turned red and his eyes were confused. He actually smacked me in the face which is something he never NEVER does! I gave him enzymes and a handful of suppliments. By the nighttime his red ears and cheeks were gone and my normal child had reappeared.

THE BOTTOM LINE? After 6 months of doing several suppliments I can vouch that these enzymes have been an integral aspect of healing my child. He now uses spontaneous language. He can match flash cards. He can follow multi-step directions. He is loving, affectionate and attention seeking. These will not cure your child but they will help and should be used with a mix of other dietary suppliments for best effect.

5This product changed my son's life!Apr 22, 2010
By Liza N. Hellenbrand "3Wild1s"
We had been using this product for several months with our high functioning autistic son, he had a reduction in constipation, better eye contact, stimming was gone, and became very interactive. We (for financial reasons) stopped giving him the enyzmes for the past three months and eye contact is gone, constipation back, he crys all the time, and is back to being "lost in his own world". He also does not want to eat and has went from 24 percentile to 18th on the growth chart in just a few months. It is heartbreaking to see the regression but I am very grateful the product is out there and will be checking my mailbox everyday waiting for the next shipment to arrive!! This product is definately a life line for our son and would highly recommend giving it a try. P.S. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Houston and he has a very impressive resume and truly cares about kiddos on the spectrum.

4use like lucky socks--not sure it's working, but still won't take them offNov 03, 2009
By E. Pelton "chronically misunderstood"
i've been buying and using these for my son, who has high functioning autism, for several months. i had switched him to the gfcf diet, also, several months ago. i had initially purchased these hoping to use them in lieu of the restricted diet, as it seemed like a much more cost-effective alternative. we were not able to use these for that purpose, they may have made some difference when we tried to reintroduce some forbidden foods, but not enough to be able to abandon the diet. however, we continue to use the enzymes religiously--for every meal and snack--and i think they are effective for catching traces of forbidden ingredients (like the buttermilk in a gf pancake mix), but i still can't give my son a yogurt of a piece of whole wheat toast. i will continue to test, as time goes on, and i remain hopeful--it just wasn't a panacea for us.

4Awesome for "oops!" but not a catch all!Mar 21, 2011
By Mental Mommy "Mental Mommy"
I have Celiac Disease. I have tried LOTS of enzymes. I swallow about 8 pills every day as I try to make up for the damage that's been done for 20-something years before being diagnosed. These enzymes will NOT enable you to eat gluten if you have Celiac Disease! They are designed to help break it down and help your body better handle the "Oops!" you may encounter due to restaurant cross-contamination or other mishaps. I may try the swallow-version next time as I was not too thrilled about the taste. It might be grape flavored, but it's still chalky, gritty grape. For children, these may still be a better option than the swallow-version, depending on the age and abilities of your child. As far as performance, I like these a lot. They are definitely better than most store brands and things you can find at average drug and grocery stores. I would say they are second in my book, with my first choice being Transformation Enzymes' DigestZyme. That version is very small pills to swallow, and if memory serves, you take fewer pills with each meal. I think the price is about the same - TriEnza has a lower price per capsule, but you have to take more of them to achieve the same effect. It works out to be about $.25 / cap for TriEnza and $.31 / cap for TE. Enzymes are GREAT, but they will not save you by themselves. Watch your diet and give yourself an enzymatic boost when you need it! These are a great way to do so!
